Late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s 21,000-square-foot mansion in Atherton, California, hit the open market recently. The property is priced at $41.5 million.

The extravagant Silicon Valley property joins another notable property owned by Allen at the time of his death in 2018, the 120-acre promontory location in Beverly Crest known as Enchanted Hill, which first hit the market in October of last year at $150 million, but was relisted this month with an ask of $110 million.

The Atherton estate was home base for the businessman and philanthropist for about five years. In 2013, he paid $27 million for it, according to public records.

The home’s size is its essential extravagance; otherwise, it’s quite understated, with traditional contemporary exterior architecture embellished with semi-rusticated limestone and conspicuous wood trim.

Interiors follow suit, with a very light, neutral execution, simple fixtures, and a foundation of upper-end materials for visual interest. Wood—generally finished natural—and natural stone provide some texture, but the living style shakes out as Eastern-inspired, even meditative. Light, space and a lack of distraction predominate.

The list of amenities is extensive, and includes a home theater with tiered seating, a huge master suite, a spectacular kitchen boasting dual islands, a double-height great room, and an entertainment space with wet bar that’s capped by a concept ceiling in staggered narrow planks.

The exterior of the property is similarly uncomplicated, and the 1.89 acres of grounds emphasize meandering gardens of desert flora; plantings offer astonishing variety. A large pool is part and parcel of the outdoor lounge and entertainment area, which boasts a large patio, a fire feature, and a generous swath of lawn.

Allen passed away in 2018. His net worth was north of $20 billion.
