Legendary interviewer Larry King decided to shed a less-essential piece of real estate this month, listing his Beverly Hills villa for $17 million.
The home may have become less essential in a hurry. The 85-year-old King—whose career has amassed a huge number of accolades, including a pair of Peabody Awards—is going through a divorce with his wife, Shawn Southwick. He has a notable number of ex-wives, too; Southwick makes seven. The pair wed in 1997 and, according to public records, purchased the estate for $11.8 million in the winter of 2007.
The house dates to 1989, and begins with a bang: beyond the wrought-iron inset double doors, the tile-floored foyer immediately forks into a curving symmetrical double staircase design, rises to a curving second-floor gallery, and is presided over by an ornate chandelier dangling from a gilded ceiling dome. Classic stuff, if not terribly interesting.
Negotiating between the staircase redundancy reveals the shared living spaces, which open up nicely into a living style that is breezy and comfortable, and a bit formal. Soft warm tones, a French fireplace mantel, and plank floors; the family room features a coffered ceiling, another fireplace, and inlaid hardwood.
There are seven bedrooms and nine baths in the home’s 10,810 square feet. A detached guest house, a splendid second-floor terrace, a large back terrace, and a charming pool fill out the private, lush half-acre of grounds.
