Performance SUV buyers may already be spoiled for choice, especially when shopping German-made. BMW isn’t making the decision-making process any easier, though.

This autumn finds the automaker pitching another four SUV variants at tire kickers looking for a family ride that can perform like a sports car. The new entries are M-designation X5 and X6, with and without the Competition package. Improved aero, more aggressive lines, and quad pipes are standard for all four. The best news, however, is the fact that all four receive the 4.4L V8 biturbo common to upper-level M-Series sports sedans.

The performance SUV truly is the all-purpose car—errand-runner, commuter, family car, and sports car—and all four new additions to the BMW lineup pack enough power to satisfy the speed lover unleashed when responsibility yields to the desires of an aviator-wearing id. The X5 M and X6 M have 600 HP and 553 lb-ft of torque to call upon, and the Competition versions of the variants bring the horsepower rating to 617 without altering the torque. The Competition versions also boast a higher limited top speed—177 MPH to the non-Competition versions’ 155.

All four variants are stiffer, with active suspension, and feature six-piston front brakes. The Competition versions receive special badging and trim.

Base pricing for the quartet starts at $106K, and extends to $119K for the top-tier X6 M Competition. Look for them in dealerships next spring.
