Sony’s modular Crystal LED screens may signal a new best option for fully tricked-out home theaters and screening rooms. But these ‘video walls’—packed with micro LEDs, which allow for astonishing contrast and 3D capability, and make the most of high dynamic range potential—come at a premium.

The technology uses superfine LEDs, each far smaller than the standard LED elements used in OLED units; think thousandths of millimeters in width. Three of them form the RGB fundamental for every pixel. Contrast dynamics are huge; Crystal blacks have astonishing depth, and the panels achieve 1,000 nit brightness, and have 10-bit greyscale capabilities. Ambient lighting reflections are negligible.

The tech is geared to larger panels, although you can custom design the video wall that works best for you…at $10K for each 16 x 18 x 4-inch panel. 1080p is the lower end. The top tier option is a 16K that is 63’ long, and will run you about $5.8 million.

Sony’s CLED system is only available through select dealers.
