When this stunning hexagonal home on the central California coast appeared on the open market last month, it did so quietly. But it turns out that the home belongs to George Michael, and had been a retreat for the musician and pop-culture figure for several years.
The property is situated in a particularly secluded corner above the city of Santa Barbara, and commands stunning views of the foothills from its promontory location. The house dates to the mid-1980s. Its design allows for a magnificent great room, which follows all six walls, offering a panorama of the local landscape through its glass walls.
Natural-toned wood runs throughout the room, which features a stone chimney as a centerpiece; otherwise, the room is uncomplicated and uncluttered, which allows the setting to express the living style; outside, a full wraparound deck presents ample opportunity for meditative alone time and entertaining. The home was designed by architect Cliff Hickman, who was profoundly influenced by Wright, and the effective blurring of the house and its landscape feels very familiar for that reason.
The vacation home extends to a little less than 4,850 square feet, and contains five bedrooms and 6.5 baths. The property’s 5.71 acres of grounds provides ample space to include a tennis court, pool and sunlounge, and guest house amid the leisurely and romantic landscaping.
Michael co-formed 80’s pop-band Wham! before embarking on a long and successful solo career. He passed away in 2016.
