Volvos have always been touted as safe cars. But this XC90 finds the company taking road going security a bit more seriously than it has in the past. It’s called the Armored Edition.

To maximize security, the company is keeping explicit details about the new vehicle’s design under wraps. But they have revealed key features of the special build. The VR8-rated crossover is prepared for a variety of assaults; it can protect its passengers from steel jacket ballistic and explosive attacks.

The Volvo looks like a normal model from the outside, but it’s as heavy as you’d expect a fully armored car to be: the Armored Edition adds a whopping 3,086 pounds to the production XC90’s overall weight. The automaker increased the size of the SUV’s brakes and amped up the suspension in order to manage the additional weight.

The vehicle is designed for customers in Latin America and Europe. Those in North America who are interested in the car should contact a Volvo dealer to arrange a special order.
