This month, Steve Martin listed his guest house in Beverly Hills for sale. The property hit the open market this week with an asking price of $2.149 million.
The 1,946 square footer dates to 1957. There’s modern in the architecture, but the style, as a whole, isn’t amenable to neat classification. The prominent second-floor balcony balustrade is Mediterranean, and exterior terra-cotta tile reinforces that design element. But this is a house that doesn’t suggest a great deal of concern with formality.
The interiors, then, are extremely inviting, and very comforting. The living room boasts a semi-vaulted ceiling with exposed beams, and plentiful glass allows for the blurring of interior/exterior that defines the modern home that is hiding in the architecture. The floors are plank hardwood, finished in a dark honey tone, warming the bright shared living space, and a fireplace accent wall offers a bit of structure and coziness. The kitchen brings a little art moderne into the picture, a welcome dimension that adds complexity to the whole.
There are four bedrooms and 4.5 baths in the house. The master features a vaulted ceiling, and a set of French doors that open broadly onto a private terrace.
The property exterior extends to a little over an acre, a fair-sized expanse that is generally used to emphasize the landscaping, a thick green border that stands between the house and the outside world.
Martin’s adaptation of 1910 play ‘The Underpants’ is being produced at Guild Hall in East Hampton this month.
