The longtime co-op apartment of Kate Spade was recently listed for $6.35 million. The unit is being offered for sale about a year after the tragic death of the influential fashion designer.

The residence is part of a Park Avenue building, measures just over 3,000 square feet, and contains three bedrooms and five baths. The shared living space features a bright, open layout, with a French-style fireplace, abundant glass, and sets of French doors offering subtle demarcation and a continual sense of invitation.

The apartment is a classic 8—that’s a propos for its sadly departed prior owner. The design sense of the place is entirely cohesive, and very classic indeed; unsurprising on both counts, but fulfilling expectations of those familiar with Spade’s economical fashion sensibility. The style is simple, and unpretentious; it finds its whimsy in unlikely places, and accumulates into a living style that finds comfort in the familiar.

Upscale apartment design tropes touched upon—aside from the fireplace—include black-and-white checkerboard and subway tile in the kitchen, herringbone oak floors, and a white treatment that allows subtle design choices to shine through vibrantly. The daring space is the office/library, which is finished in a shade of red that is both intriguing and subdued.

Spade sold a controlling interest in her handbag brand to Neiman Marcus in 1999; she sold them the rest of it six years later, and launched follow up brand Frances Valentine in 2016.
