Kirstie Alley’s longtime home in Los Feliz has been on the market for six months now. So it was time for the requisite 10% price snip, and late last month it received the cut. The actress initially offered the fantastical Mediterranean-style estate for $11.97 million late last fall; the property is now asking $10.75 million. Which should stimulate a little renewed interest in this fascinating residence.
Alley has owned the house for nearly twenty years. She’s customized the home to taste to some degree—the lemur habitat on the property is the most salient example of her ownership tenure—but the property has never been lacking for uniqueness since it went up in 1931.
The house begins with a dramatic recessed entry, replete with carved stone—including a pair of Corinthian columns—leading to a set of original oak double doors with wrought-iron insets which are capped by a set of quarter moon panes.
The 8,622 square-footer develops from there in a marvelously florid, take-no-prisoners and make-no-excuses style. Many of the more visually striking features are maintained original or restored, including the frescoes that greet in the rotunda foyer, and extend up the staircase, fully fleshing out the decadent Roman feel. Herringbone oak floors, extremely detailed crown moldings, gold leaf, and a limestone fireplace carved with a passel of cherubs are other notable eye-catchers.
The lot extents to nine-tenths of an acre—a fair size that allows plenty of room for the romantic, edge-of-wild landscaping to fully flower into an escapist idyll. A broad terrace, a pool, an arcade with hand-painted tile, a lemur habitat, and water features add the final touches to a unique property clearly loved by its owner.
