Actress Jessica Chastain has picked up a beauty of a Manhattan townhome. This month, Chastain plunked down $8.9 million for the 1899-built brownstone property, which features an ornate façade, and interiors packed to bursting with period details.

The property’s exterior is embellished with Romanesque carved flourishes, and features an extravagant set of steps and front doors as a prologue, as well as a spectacular arched entry.

Within, updates are limited, but conspicuous. They include the kitchen—which now features an abundance of natural-finished wood, clean lines, and just enough stainless—the baths, a couple of the bedrooms, and a shared living space. The parlor floor is defined by a knee-buckling series of craftsman-like original features, including hand-carved wood, crown and dentil moldings, ornamental columns, fireplaces, and inlaid plank oak floors.

There are eight bedrooms and seven baths throughout the five above-ground floors of the house. The master suite features casement windows, and a spectacular marble fireplace with a neo-renaissance mantel.

The upper floor studio space has been altered with a Japanese-inspired look with shoji screens and trim in a series of simple wood lines. A classic rooflight liberates the space beautifully, and a guest bedroom completes the floor. A garden patio and fourth-floor terrace comprise the outdoor living space.

Chastain’s in high demand. Her upcoming film roles include that of Tammy Wynette; the upcoming George and Tammy is in pre-production. She’s also set to star in X-Men: Dark Phoenix and It: Chapter Two, among other blockbuster roles.
