Musician Chris Martin has a new property in Malibu to croon about—the contemporary waterfront house came between the Coldplay co-founder and $5.475 million.
The home is positioned on a cliffside promontory in Pont Dume that surveys a quieter corner of the storied beachside city. The ranch-style home dates to 1960, but was comprehensively renovated prior to the sale.
The exterior of the home doesn’t show much style, but the interiors have been revised into a warm, contemporary living style. The open-concept main living space culminates in a kitchen that borrows from the Scandinavian design style: natural-finished wood, rounded edges, and a brand of utilitarianism that feels gentle and optimistic rather than industrial, moody, or cool.
The layout meanders, as any ranch is bound to, but the quarter-sawn white oak plank floors provide a constant and beautiful reference point. Plank ceilings throughout much of the home give it a cottagey appeal, and a white treatment of walls and ceilings provides an abundance of reflected light. Oversize windows and a sliding glass wall in the shared living area open up the home to the green of the property.
There are three bedrooms and 2 baths in the 1,816 square feet of interior living space. Both offer the occasional charming, careful touches; tops is the bath that features silhouetted mermaid-motif wall covering, and a shower tiled in competing cool and warm tones.
The property is fairly sizeable for Malibu—nearly half an acre. Lawns, and outdoor lounging/dining area, and a kid’s play area. Down the hill, Little Dume beach awaits: the property comes with access.
Martin is the lead singer of Coldplay. The band has sold over 90 million records worldwide.
