In the past two years, entertainment industry powerhouse David Geffen has sold several properties, including his longtime beachfront compound in Malibu, which went for $85 million in May of 2017, setting a record for the city which may still stand.

Well, this spring finds Geffen in a spendy mood, shelling out $4.65 million for a detail-rich single-floor midcentury modern. The 1947-built home was overhauled in 1972, according to public records; the revision included an addition. The home was updated this winter before being listed for $4.5 million in February.

The 3,267 square-footer is presumably an investment for Geffen; it also could be a guest home for ‘who knows’ because he understandably took a shine to it. Its details are occasionally very unique, with thoughtful riffs and flourishes including a kitchen finished in very warm dark gloss custom cabinetry, with stainless, Corian and key lime walls adding textural and cool-tone dimensions; unpretentious, and very appealing.

The house is occasionally fairly compartmentalized for a modern; the kitchen uses an accent wall with a service portal to separate the dining room. A living room with an imposing fireplace accent wall casts a formal spell, but the family room receives three walls of glass with lovely city and ocean views, and takes the prize; it’d make a fantastic visual artist’s studio.

Four bedrooms, and four baths. One of the smaller bedrooms gets the niftiest bath—an angular space that’s tight, but too interesting to be claustrophobic—and the master receives sliding glass opening onto the pool, and a bath with a glassy niche soaking tub.

Geffen’s genius lies in the music industry; his record labels signed artists including The Eagles, Bob Dylan, Donna Summer, John Lennon, Elton John, Cher, Aerosmith, Guns N’ Roses, and Nirvana. He formerly owned 377′ megayacht Pelorus, which he had purchased for $300 million from Roman Abramovich’s ex-wife Irina.

A prominent philanthropist, Geffen has donated in the hundreds of millions of dollars to UCLA. His net worth is in the neighborhood of $9 billion.
