For those deep-pocketed souls searching out the current ideal reconciliation between SUV functionality and sports-car seat-of-your-pants frisson, the Lamborghini Urus now has some direct competition: the Bentley Bentayga Speed.
Never one to pass up a spirited game of badminton, the English automaker has volleyed across the pond to its VW Group cousin by rolling out a luxury SUV that just ekes past the 190-MPH Urus with a top speed that’s half a mile-per-hour quicker. There’s British humor in there.
Of course, the deciding factor is the brand’s narrative subtext. Lambo: brash, high-performance, unapologetic. Bentley: aristocratic, Savile Row, sandstone, and—as opposed to staid Rolls—progressive, but without betraying its blue-blooded roots.
The Bentayga Speed also comes with a litany of supporting features, including a sport exhaust, hunkered body shape, and the high-performance brakes needed to balance out the power boost. The suspension has been tweaked for a track-style ride, too; likewise, the Sport mode. Of note is the roll-control system to keep the SUV’s higher center of gravity and its muscular abilities playing nice.
The Speed’s interiors are also geared to sprinting, and now feature a more dynamic cabin style. The accents look the part, and the abundant Alcantara should help sell it to the well-to-do young lions with the bread to buy it.
The Bentayga Speed will make its formal debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
