In the spring of 2016, celebrity trainer and fitness guru Jillian Michaels listed her heavyweight luxe-industrial postmodern Malibu beach home for sale for a shade less than $10 million. But despite previous efforts, the home and its new adorer have remained mutually exclusive. And so, early in 2017, a $1 million price reduction.
After that, Ms. Michaels seems to have dug in her heels, expressing perhaps the determination and grit she espouses for her faithful fans. The latest re-list of the house finds the curiously appealing concrete-and-glass residence asking $8.795 million, a bit up from the $8.775 million it was marketed at when the listing was refreshed in June of 2017. Michaels is not in a hurry.
And there’s no reason why she should be. The home’s exterior architecture is glassy, tough and imposing, but the interior living style is an affecting mix of ponderous and welcoming. It’s defined by poured concrete and timber accents, but it achieves a remarkable sense of cohesion for that reason, and a great deal of warmth.
A soaring great-room ceiling combines with the glass walls to blur the home and its setting in the most acute and meaningful way, and the floating staircase adds even more ethereal feeling to provide ample balance for the intense and heavy look of concrete. The Scandinavian-inspired kitchen brings another element of complexity to the fore.
The house measures a little more than 3,150 square feet, and its living space spans three floors. The master gets its own floor, as it should; above it, the roof provides a large outdoor terrace, with fire features and enough space for larger gatherings.
