Among the many technological innovations on display at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show was BMW Motorrad’s self-riding motorcycle.
The German automaker’s motorcycle division was anxious to display the motorcycle to the captive CES audience, showing off its ability to start, stop, and turn without a rider. A standard BMW model R 1200 GS was used for the prototype, and retrofitted with hard cases housing the advanced software necessary.
The secret BMW Motorrad project has been five years in the making, but so far has been a matter of exploration over production. The tech has been developed thus far to identify methods for riding on BMW’s standard bikes.
Specifically, this sort of technology could be helpful in teaching new riders how to handle their motorcycles more safely. With the push for autonomous vehicles only accelerating, we’re betting this won’t be the last self-riding motorcycle to be developed, though.
