A special new edition of Lincoln‘s Continental is on the way. It looks rarified, dignified…and more than a little Bentley-like as it compresses Lincoln history into a 21st-century American luxury car statement.
Most interesting are the suicide doors, which harken back to the heyday of the brand. The SE, which is called the 80th Anniversary Coach Door Edition, also features a stretched body for a sleek, elongated look; the design speaks ‘touring car’ quite fluently.
The 80th Anniversary Coach Door Edition is given a facelift by Massachusetts’ Cabot Coach Builders, who helped Lincoln design the variant to suggest 1960s-era Continentals as well as the model’s 80 years of production. The already high-end sedan is stretched six inches and modified to feature coach doors that open to a 90-degree angle. The car also features standout rear doors that latch forward.
Inside there’s the Lincoln hallmark: plenty of room to stretch out and get comfortable. In addition to a long center console that flows through from the front to the back of the vehicle, there are also controls for climate and audio adjustments.
Power-wise, everything remains the same as the production Continental; the new doors only add about 150 pounds, so the speed-performance profile should remain unchanged. The model’s optional 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 makes 400 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque.
As is expected with special edition builds like these, the number is limited: just 80 Coach Door Continentals are going to roll out of the factory. Interested customers should expect to pay at least $100,000 for the 80th Anniversary Coach Door Edition.
