Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann have an impressive new roost in coastal SoCal. The couple picked up the penthouse unit at the Ocean Aire in Santa Monica, shelling out $14.5 million for the top-floor condo.
The building—which overlooks Palisades Park—has an interesting history. One of its investors was actor William Holden; the star of such classics as ‘Bridge on the River Kwai’ was also a former owner of Apatow and Mann’s unit. The Ocean Aire was designed by architect A. Quincy Jones—that is, a Quincy Jones, but of course not the Quincy Jones. It opened in 1963, and was renovated in 2001. It has 48 units in its 12 floors of residences.
The penthouse views are lovely without being vertigo-inducing; the beach and ocean stretch into the distance, and the greenness of Santa Monica is on full display. The unit stretches to 11,000 square feet, a full-floor unit with six bedrooms and 7.5 baths in its living spaces.
The hardwood paneling, cabinetry, trim and floors give the unit a great deal of warmth; some of the trim and cabinetry has been painted off-white to open things up a little. The master bath is especially warm, with reddish-beige marble and hardwood contributing to the effect. As elsewhere, lots of glass opens up the room beautifully. The gem is the living room capped with a spectacular lantern skylight.
Apatow and Mann met during filming of ‘The Cable Guy’ in the mid-1990s. They have been married since 1997.
