John Gilbert Getty recently purchased the Hollywood Hills home that was, at one time, the West Coast home base of heavyweight method actor Marlon Brando. Getty shelled out $3.9 million for the distinctive residence.
Getty—of the J. Paul Getty oil family—is now the proud owner of the iconic actor’s former 1926-built architectural oddity, a Spanish-style with an imposing medieval-influenced stature that is softened considerably by feminine lines and the stucco look. It was designed by famed architect A.F. Leicht.
Distinctive design elements including turrets, buttresses, and a looming exterior. Interiors wander wonderfully, spanning 4,363 square feet; the five-bedroom home features a central living room with its soaring rounded ceiling, grand fireplace, and over-sized windows looking out to the city beyond.
An art studio, a den, a family room and a library are a few of the other niche living spaces scattered throughout. Floors are tile or narrow-plank hardwood; much of the hardwood has been refinished in the current style.
Interestingly, this property is the second Leicht residence Getty has owned. In 2014, he sold a similarly styled house designed by the architect in Los Feliz; the Andalusian-inflected castle-like house that fetched $8.3 million at the time.
Brando made his cinematic mark with method impresario Elia Kazan, taking home one of his two Oscars for his portrayal of near-contender Terry in the director’s ‘On the Waterfront’.
