Formula 3 racing would be a somewhat different sport if Italian automotive engineer and chassis manufacturer Dallara were to pull out of the game. For four decades now, the company has been an essential and intractable presence in the class, monopolizing the track, but also acting as a kind of impresario, especially when it comes to young talent.

But the folks at Dallara have aspirations that veer from professional courses, and steer toward a more visible presence on legal roads. To that end, they’ve been quite busy with their Stradale, the first street-legal solo effort from the company. They did work in concert with Austrian sports car and motorcycle maker KTM to produce the street-legal X-BOW a decade ago, but the Stradale—which means ‘road’—is the first exotic they’ve produced all on their lonesome.

The Stradale is a fluid-looking beast; no angularity here, and not much drama for a road car that looks track. The Stradale of now looks aero without undue silliness, and is prettiest in profile, with broad, rounded lines and pronounced side vents.

Dallara borrowed a Ford engine for the Stradale, tweaking the little turbo until it produced 400 horsepower; not huge, but the carbon-fiber car weighs less than a ton, checking in at 1885 pounds dry. It is available as a standard, too.

Price? A little less than $180K. The production run for the first year was nearly sold out for before the car was unveiled.
