The villa Marylin Monroe and Joe DiMaggio called their West Coast home hit the open market this week. The idyllic property is priced at $2.7 million.
Located in the Outpost Estates area above Hollywood Boulevard, the residence served as a refuge for the actress and her New York Yankee husband during their short-lived marriage; the couple wed in January of 1954, and divorced nine months later.
The 3,335-square-foot Spanish-style rambles eccentrically in the best possible way across three floors. A variety of window shapes and a nook-and-cranny insouciance make for a dreamy period impression from outside.
Inside, plaster walls, arched doorways, open-trussed ceilings, period light fixtures, a bit of brick, and occasionally surprising use of trim color distinguishes the home. There’s a great deal of original tile, with Saltillo, hand-painted, and hexagonal styles all represented. A kitchen remodel was conducted with unusual sensitivity.
The master suite is a knockout, with a prominent set of French doors opening broadly onto a private balcony for a breezy feel, and a whitewashed brick fireplace turning up the charm. There are four bedrooms and 4.5 bath all told.
Terrace, deck, and balcony spaces present a variety of outdoor living options, as well as sprawling views of the hills and canyons beyond. The home is set on nearly an acre of hillside land, and is accented by lush tiered landscaping that makes the most of the location. The grotto-style swimming pool and spa is lovely.
DiMaggio and Monroe spent much of their married life on the East Coast; the couple shared a suite in the Lexington Hotel in Manhattan.
