Travis Kalanick bought into 565 Broome. The building—currently still under construction—is getting a great deal of attention for its architecture and its forward-thinking location as it enters into its completion phase.
565 Broome’s location is strategic and a little iconoclastic: it is situated right next to the Holland Tunnel. It is the tallest residential building in SoHo, and now helps to define the area; it’s also known as ‘The SoHo Tower.’
The building is the work of Pritzker-winner Renzo Piano. Devotees or architecture and/or the city of London may recognize the name; Piano designed the Shard, which launches 95 floors into the London sky. 565 Broome is Piano’s only residential building in the city at present, although his other efforts in Manhattan include the New York Times building and the Whitney Museum.
Which may be partly why Kalanick dropped $40.5 million with no compunction on the building’s penthouse. There’s plenty of dazzle involved, with a massive two-story great room with floor-to-ceiling glass presenting an awe inspiring sense of scale and connection to the city, blurring the demarcation between private space and Manhattan. The duplex condo measures well over 6,700 square feet, with four bedrooms and 4.5 baths. Fixtures and décor are extremely tasteful; Molteni kitchen cabinets are a very nice touch, and say a great deal about the complexity of the pedigree.
The unit’s 2,500 square feet of outdoor terrace space may take the prize, however. The views are astonishing, and a hardwood lounge surrounds a private heated pool.
Travis Kalanick is the former CEO of Uber. His net worth is estimated at $6 billion.
