A few days ago, Audi revealed changes to their R8 performance car. What’s new for the mid-engine AWD supercar?
In outward appearance, the refreshed R8 gets larger air intakes, and the revised design of the sides of the model represents a small but dramatic shift. Other lesser design tweaks can be spotted by the enthusiast, and they include a larger diffuser and front splitter, smoothed front fenders, and a rear grille that extends the full width of the car.
The R8 is the performance figurehead—and, in some sense, the figurehead period—for the automaker, so mechanical improvements are numerous. And Audi has decided to skip the half measures for the new iteration of the flagship when it comes to monikers, and call it the ‘V10 Performance’ instead of the ‘V10 Plus.’ The 5.2L engine has been tuned to squeeze out an additional ~6% horsepower over the outgoing models; the base R8 now has a rating of 562.
To compensate, the new R8 features improved braking distance. Other performance upgrades include a tuned engine control and steering and—for the V10 Performance variant—a series of driving modes: dry, wet, and snow. Familiar fare, but Audi figured that there’s no reason to alter the essentials at this point.
U.S. deliveries should begin toward the early spring of next year. Audi hasn’t finalized pricing yet; the base sticker for a 2018 R8 is a little less than $140K.
