Media tycoon Shane Smith has listed his charming brick-and-raw-timber pied-a-terre in Tribeca for sale with an asking price of $5.85 million. Smith has owned the unit in the Desbrosses Street co-op for nearly a decade, and has clearly had plenty of time to tastefully customize the apartment.
The duplex unit measures 3,200 square feet, with four beds and four baths in its layout; a small room currently serving as a guest accommodation is more than a little cramped, but otherwise the bedrooms are cozily individual. The shared living spaces are as open, eccentric, and comfortingly unpretentious as any traditional Village loft-lover could want.
Worn brick, ancient, battered timber, and floor-to-ceiling support beams with steel caps all catch the eye. The plank floors are finished quite dark, but the abundant natural light and plentiful red brick keep the balanced mood intact. Built-ins and a comfortably funky kitchen with sky-blue cabinetry sustain the charm factor.
In the upstairs section—at one time a distinct unit—the brick is whitewashed; an elegantly simple staircase transitions between floors. The master suite is a beaut with surprising details galore: a step-up sleeping area accented with built-ins and exposed beams, and a bath with a glass-and-wood entry. The bath riffs spectacularly on classic black-and-white tile, and the effect is quite striking.
Smith co-founded Vice Media in 1994, and was CEO until this year. He narrated the 2016 documentary ‘A House Divided’ as part of the HBO-Vice partnership; the film was nominated for an Emmy Award. Smith’s net worth is north of $1 billion.
