Comedian and television personality Rosie O’Donnell has listed her rather formal home in New Jersey for sale. The listing comes about ten months after O’Donnell listed her five-house compound in Nyack as a single property, and piecemeal; the crown jewel of that estate sold this winter, for over $5 million.
The New Jersey estate is located in Saddle River, an affluent community near the border of New York. O’Donnell purchased it five years ago for $6.38 million, and first listed it about two years later for a shadow under $7 million. Subsequent price cuts leave it at its current listing ask of $5.995 million. O’Donnell’s selloff in the Northeast means business.
The property is overtly aristocratic. The house dates to the late 1920’s, and is designed in the style of an English manor. The extravagant stone motor court, and winged stone and exposed timber house are surrounded by mature trees and grounds that extend to well over five acres.
Inside, the foyer’s sculpted staircase and inlaid marble floor blossom into a sprawling home filled with detail. Wood paneling, crown moldings, and plank oak floors all compete for attention. The dayroom is filled with windows, and is crowned by a domed ceiling with a cloudy-sky fresco, a nice effect, albeit a very ornate one.
A theater room with a marble fireplace, an entertainment room with a fieldstone fireplace and a pub-style wet-bar also stand out. The master suite is a duesie, though; many avenues, many corners, and a bath that suggests the palatial.
The property exterior is lovely. Mature trees, formal landscaping, a guest house that riffs on the main house, and a kidney pool with a waterfall feature fill out the grounds.
