For 2020, Mercedes has unveiled a changed GLE—and changed for the better, if you like the crossover design style. Because as of 2020 the model will no longer look like an SUV transitioning into a crossover, it’ll look like a crossover. But the incoming version will be generation four of the model, and a long time coming: the outgoing generation was introduced in 2011.
And a very family-oriented one at that. Although this GLE is three inches longer than the last, the back end is the soul of brevity, and the spoiler’s been clipped. From the side, the line that sweeps up from the front door has been dropped, and what remains is a conservative indication of form. The nose features a grille that’s considerably less dramatic, and the front end loses the flanking intakes. Overall, it’s more understated than ever, a workhorse of the Mercedes variety.
Most interesting are the active suspension and AWD systems. The car can make snap decisions on the fly, raising or lowering the carriage, damping one or more wheels, and send more power to the rear or front wheels.
Tech and performance updates come fast and furious. The now-familiar two-screen cluster and touchscreen is present, trim includes LED flourishes, and the divider is prominent; the cabin has a tight feel, but performance-oriented, not cramped. The driver-assist and safety suites are as up-to-date as you’d expect, with an anticipatory adaptive cruise and speed adjustments among the features.
Lastly, the engine. The model is still a mild hybrid. The ICE is a turbocharged 2L 4-cylinder, with electric power bringing the horsepower to 362, and the torque to 369 pound-feet.
Mercedes isn’t talking price just yet. But the GLE will be available in the first half of next year.
