Electronic side mirrors have popped up in various concept cars over the years, but Lexus’ 2019 ES will be the very first mainstream production model to officially trade traditional side mirrors for side-view monitors.
Lexus is leading the charge on the tech leap. For now, the Japanese automaker is only planning to release ES models with the new Digital Outer Mirrors in its home country. But it’s safe to say that cameras will likely be replacing mirrors in many luxury vehicles in the near future.
Lexus ES drivers will now rely on two small interior screens perfectly arranged to allow visual access to essential footage. The replacement marks a general safety feature improvement, of course; the cameras incorporate tech for object identification, blind spot warnings, and merge indications, and will enhance the effectiveness of driver assist suites. A special zoom feature will make reversing easier than ever, and the system is able to compensate during operation and anticipate driver focus to trouble spots.
Other luxury car manufacturers will soon be moving in the same direction. European automakers may soon be using a similar system currently under development at Bosch.
