Looking ahead, BMW recently unveiled its sleek and eco-friendly 2020 BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance.

The German automaker has featured plug-in hybrid models since the 2016 X5 xDrive40e, but the launch of the X5 fourth generation plug-in is more competitive in one essential way: the new version is projected to increase the vehicle’s electric range significantly.

The new X5 plug-in isn’t scheduled to hit showrooms until 2019, so many details on the specifics of the model have yet to be revealed. But the new X5 is expected to have a single-charge range of 50 miles, which is a major improvement over the outgoing model’s 14, and an increased electric mode top speed of 87 mph.

The hybrid X5 gets an engine upgrade. Future X5 drivers will benefit from a new 3.0-liter inline-6 turbocharged ICE paired with an electric motor. Overall, it is expected to produce 394 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque.

All that power means translates to a zero-to-62 mph leap of about 5.6 seconds. BMW hasn’t shared any information about pricing yet, but the plug-in X5 is likely to start in the $70,000-plus range.
