In the second half of this month, BMW finally let the world have a look at its first official production Z4, the ‘First Edition’ M40i. The model had appeared as a concept at last year’s Pebble Beach extravaganza, and came full circle this year when it was officially debuted as a production model at the same culminating corner of the Monterey Car Week this month.
A first look at the finished product reveals that the M40i has a nose less dominated by air intakes; the concept had a couple of flanking deusies to show off, and the production version has reigned them in considerably, giving cohesion to the front end. In comparison with the outgoing Z4, the new model shows off a bit more angularity and aggression; the kidney grilles are a bit more severe, and the whole front end looks considerably more muscular, if more rounded.
In profile, the 2019 Z4 looks more refined, with the side vents sending lines upward, and toward the rear. The rear features a spoiler lip, and prominent wheel vents.
Performance features include an M Sport rear differential, and M sport brakes, and a 3L inline six-cylinder engine. BMW isn’t discussing other specifications just yet, but they will be at some point in the next few weeks.
Deliveries are expected to begin around the middle of next year, with pricing TBA.
