A little over 18 months ago, billionaire and philanthropist Warren Buffett listed his longtime coastal retreat in Southern Cal for sale with an asking price of $11 million. Buffett has owned the property for about four decades.

The home is situated in a gated community in Laguna Beach. The original house dates to the late 1930’s, and features streamline flourishes. It is fairly modest in size, with five en-suite bedrooms throughout its 3,600 square feet.

The interiors are unassuming, and generally blandly innocuous; white and off-white, track lighting, and grey carpet prevail through most of the home. A kid’s room gets a little color, though, as does a bathroom papered in New Yorker magazine covers; the latter could be considered homage or satire, depending on whether or not you like the New Yorker, so a little extroverted wit does stray into the home.

The exterior living space includes the main deck, a master suite terrace, and a porch and balcony; the streamline balustrade throughout helps evoke a period liner. The home contains a pair of fireplaces, with the master suite receiving its own, and the family room getting the second. The master suite is, of course, situated in its own separate wing.

The home’s idiosyncratic, layered appearance is likely the result of numerous renovations over the years; Buffett added to it periodically, to keep it relevant in the context of a changing family. Which is likely the reason for the sale.

Buffett’s net worth is reportedly in the neighborhood of $75 billion.
