Sidney Kimmel first listed Johnny Carson’s old Malibu sanctuary last October; his initial asking price for the architecturally significant house on the extensive park-like property was both significant and extensive: $81.5 million. A price cut of precisely 20% of that initial ask, however, brings the current price to $65.2 million.
That’s a significant reduction, employed to jump-start serious interest. At over $80 million, the price tag was perhaps a little too bullish. But this is extremely unique; however beautiful, it is a magnificent anachronism. It takes a special buyer, in the rarified atmosphere of upper 8 figures, to really desire such an unusual house.
For those who are charmed by its now-quaint consolations, the property is almost impossibly lovely. The landscaping alone is deviously disarming, and the house itself is flat-out magnificent. It’s a statement strongly allied with its period—severe modernist geometry balanced with an abundance of naturalistic evocations makes for a rather rigid position of stylistic equipoise—but the just-shy-of 7,100 square-foot home is capable of dazzling.
The heart of the home is the great room, which features a 30’ glass ceiling and is designed around an arboretum. Lower ceilings provide transitions between it and the rest of the house; it is a locus of resolution.
The property exterior extends to four acres on the Point Dume bluffs; an unusually large parcel for Malibu waterfront, with beach access. The grounds are sylvan and landscaped lush, and gardens abound. A tennis court, guest house, and entertainment pavilion fill out the lot.
