Popular director and screenwriter Ryan Murphy recently listed his customized Laguna Beach estate for $18.75 million.

In this case, “estate” is a particularly apropos term: the home is set on a full acre overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and is remarkably private, with an extensive, landscaped buffer giving it an extremely secluded feel.

Murphy picked up the Los Angeles-area home for $4.475 million in 2004, and quickly embarked on a lengthy series of renovations. Along with architect Mark Singer, he fully reworked the home to create the modern 6,500-square-foot manse we see today. The home is marked by its floods of natural light, thanks to walls of retractable glass and skylights.

The four-bedroom home is accented with natural woods, luxe stone accents, and original Mid-Century rosewood cabinetry. Potential buyers will likely be drawn to the central great room that moves to an open-concept kitchen.

The decade-long renovations extended out to the plot itself, with dramatic changes there including a full revision of the gardens and the addition of the incredible pool pavilion. The pavilion looks more like a contemporary art installation than a swimming pool, and is accented by panoramic views of the water, an outdoor kitchen, and a detached guesthouse.

Murphy co-created “American Horror Story” and “Glee”; his more recent work includes Fox series ‘9-1-1’.
