In the spring of 2016, Jim Belushi whisper-listed his estate in Brentwood with an asking price of $42 million. The property surfaced on the open market about eighteen months later with an asking price of $38.5 million. As of this week the home is back, with yet another price reduction. It is now available at a whisker under $30 million.
The estate was a labor of love for Belushi and his wife, Jennifer. They purchased the undeveloped parcel for $8.3 million in 2007. The villa—which came to be called Burlingame—was designed by Oscar Shamamian. It was completed in 2010.
The 11,821 square feet of interiors were designed by Michael Smith. The finished style blends a stodgy ideal of tradition and a desire to beguile; the result is carefully composed, and nicely detailed. Reclaimed wood and tile, and hand-hewn floorboards, give it a pleasing rusticity and a sense of history that belies its recent vintage. The ornate plaster ceilings of the formal dining room and living room are nicely balanced by tongue-and-groove elsewhere. And, a full suite of amenities complements the six bedrooms and eleven baths; a billiards room, a library, and a media/screening room and home theater top the list.
The property exterior is lovely. Gardens are designed in the romantic style, with surprise and a meandering layout keeping the accent away from the over-groomed look.
Mr. Belushi’s screen work as of late incudes a supporting role in Woody Allen’s ‘Wonder Wheel’…and a role in the ‘Twin Peaks’ reboot. Existential mystery and damn fine coffee, and a whole cherry pie too.
