Ben Affleck has hefted his coastal Georgia retreat onto the open market; the substantial property incorporates three residences amid 87 acres of land on Hampton Island, a privacy-minded community nestled away about 30 miles south of Savannah. The actor picked up the property in 2003, and used it frequently as a welcome getaway.
The property layout makes it versatile; it is as equally suited to intimate getaways as it is for multi-family vacation time. The three separate houses are architecturally diverse, but all feature rustic interiors.
The main house is the most formal. The home is a Greek Revival, and features a dramatic second-story entrance flanked by Doric columns, and a large foyer as an opening statement of welcoming. The first floor employs reclaimed pine and brick, and is nicely engineered for an unassuming, easygoing feel. More extravagant Southern gentility is the rule on the second: chandeliers, crown moldings, 15’ ceilings for cooling and breathing room. The main house measures about 6,000 square feet, and contains four bedrooms and five baths.
The other two houses are of a kind. The Summer Cottage is a small, one-floor structure currently laid out as a common space; an elevated boardwalk leads to the dock. The Oyster House is the largest of the three structures, and measures 10,000 square feet. It is entirely rustic within, and features a wide-open floor plan with a wrap-around second-floor gallery. The nautical theme uses reclaimed bunk beds from ships for sleeping accommodations.
The Georgia escape may be passé and impractical for Mr. Affleck. In April of this year, he became the owner of a 13,000 square-foot mansion in Pacific Palisades; the property sold for just shy of $20 million.
