Pharrell Buys Tyler Perry’s Imposing L.A. Mansion for $15.6M

About eight months ago, Tyler Perry picked up a unique investment property in Beverly Hills. The comedian and writer plunked down about $15 million for an extravagant, chilly, glass-and-steel architectural statement, only to flip the collegiate-looking home onto the market in February of this year for $17 million.

Well, it seems that musician Pharrell Williams shares Perry’s eye for residential line, as he was the buyer of the 17,000 square foot leviathan of a contemporary. Williams, currently cresting on a solid wave of critical accolade, popularity, and profit, wasn’t shy about plunking down a few-odd million either, paying Perry $15.6 million for the papers.

The home’s civic aesthetic falls away once the door opens. From without, it’s an imposing vision in glass, with massive transparent walls that give it a look of startling continuation.

From within, the execution is extremely stylized and pretty heavy-handed, with geometric forms and angles a-plenty, and many a ponderous accent; the interior garden and extended water feature on the first floor is really quite lovely, marrying contemporary American architecture forcefully with Japanese ideals for residential spaces.

The home contains ten bedrooms and eleven baths across two floors. Amenities include sports courts, a koi pond for the koi, and a massive pool complex with a grotto.

Perry—of the Midas touch—carries a net worth in excess of $600 million; it’s probably not too heavy, though.

Pharrell Williams has been a NYU Tisch School Artist-In-Residence, and owns an education-based non-profit called From One Hand to AnOTHER; the foundation seeks to effect positive community change at the grassroots level: by empowering kids with their own talents.
