Kirsten Dunst recently sold her lofty and brick-lined Soho pied-a-terre. The actress had listed the property at a shadow under $4.5 million prior to the sale; it sold for $4.43 million. She picked it up in 2007, for about $3 million.

The unit is located in 533 Canal, which is situated on the border of Soho and Tribeca. The wide-open space is very warm and has a pleasing sense of scale. It’s a fairly small residence, but the brick and wide plank hardwood floors (which may be original to the 1911 building) make it cozy over compact. The concrete ceilings give it a little industrial credibility; a classic criterion for Soho.

And, there are a few standout details that place it firmly in the upscale category of historic arts-district territory. The hand-painted tile in the bath adds good texture, the built-in bookcase in the gallery ups the charm level, and the partition doors that demarcate the living room and gallery or reading room are designed after Shoji. The interiors are nicely executed, in that they never look overblown or pretentious.

Renovations include the kitchen, but the changes are nicely incorporated in keeping with the history of the space.

533 Canal—a.k.a. 477 Washington—has been home to many a stalwart creative; past or present residents include filmmaker Gus Van Sant.

Dunst’s recent work includes a starring role in Sofia Coppola’s literate 2017 remake of the 1970’s Southern Gothic classic ‘The Beguiled’.
