The Big Man—that is, the real Big Shaq—has decided to sell his big property in Orange County, Florida. Mr. O’Neal listed the estate for $28 million.
The sale comes as a bit of a surprise, as the NBA legend has customized the home substantially over the years, and among the additions to the property under the ball-player’s tenure is a pool complex called ‘Shaq-apulco,’ an indoor sports facility, and a master suite with a custom bed…a big one. Although a quarter century of ownership—O’Neal purchased the place in 1993—might indicate time for a change.
The main house is a whopper, fitting the scale of the rest of the property. The landward side of the waterfront home features a towering porte-cochere entrance supported by a quartet of columns.
Within, onc is greeted with a double-height foyer that features a split staircase, inlaid stone, wrought iron, and plentiful hardwood. The great room is also double-height, and features a second floor gallery, and a massive fireplace accent wall sheathed in marble.
The house contains living space that measures in at 31,000 square feet, and a full suite of extravagant amenities, including a wine room and humidor, a home theater with tiered seating, and an entertainment/family room with wet bar. Balconies abound front and back, and there is water on both sides of the home.
The property stretches to three acres, and abuts Lake Butler. It includes a summer kitchen and a dock with cabana.
O’Neal’s long professional career included a long stint with the Lakers during their heyday. In a single year, he won three most valuable player awards: NBA, All-Star, and Finals.
