BMW is keeping up with and surpassing the proverbial Joneses with the introduction of its 2019 M5 Competition Edition.

The luxury performance vehicle market is nearly as competitive as the Indy 500 when it comes to the constant race to increase power. For example, the still-new BMW M5 made quite the impression with a zero-t0-60 mph leap of just 3.2 seconds. Sooner or later, technological advances will slow. The competition for the fastest ICE vehicle will inevitably plateau. Won’t it?

Before the speedsters really have time to digest the M5, along comes the M5 Competition Edition. The newest of the new BMWs now produces 617 horsepower, up 17 from the 600-hp base. This addition of 17 horses comes from software adjustments to the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. It makes the leap to 60 mph a hair faster, taking only 3.1 seconds.

BMW really focused on power with the new edition; the vehicle only boasts minor body adjustments, like a 7mm lower setup, increased spring rates, and stiffer engine mounts. The M5 Competition also features a new sports exhaust and new 20-inch forged alloy wheels.
