Hollywood Star Rooney Mara Offering Mid-Century Modern in L.A. for $3.45M

It’s been nearly a year since Rooney Mara listed her midcentury modern home in the quietly upscale enclave of Los Feliz. The actress initially listed the property in May of last year with an asking price of $3.8 million, a substantially higher but not entirely unreasonable sum for a home she’d picked up a couple of years before for $2.9 million. The first price chop came two months later, dropping the ask to $3.6 million, and the recent re-listing of the property finds it trimmed again, this time to $3.45 million.

Which may do the trick. A multi-year renovation has left the home significantly changed, and removed from the picture the warmer trappings of the style which traditionally act as a balancing influence for its less gentle architectural elements; mid-toned hardwood floors in a mid-century modern, therefore, can come across as either dated or still very relevant, depending on your point of view.

The home in its current iteration is a more subtle and more detached space. It leaves the eye a little starved for color, making the muted cool tones that enter the composition stand out in contrast. Otherwise, it finds its current voice in its original steel beams, new terrazzo floors, and abundant glass. There are quietly playful elements, too—witness the use of pegboard, the variegated built-in office shelving, and the winking irony of an alcove window seat—and they take the place of overt warmth.

The home’s 2,350 square feet incorporate two bedrooms and 1.5 baths; compact, but the style makes best use of its space. The cantilevered deck offers unusually fine views of the city.

Additions to Rooney’s resume in 2018 include a starring role in ‘Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot’ and the eponymous lead in ‘Mary Madgelene.’
