Within days of giving his 25-acre estate retreat in the Hamptons another price chop—the property is now listed at $12.8 million, down from the initial listing price of $18 million set about two years ago—Matt Lauer has put his Upper East Side home on the open market with an asking price of $7.35 million.
The Lenox Hill co-op apartment is a four-bed five-bath in a pre-war residential building. The 64th Street address features a limestone exterior and neoclassical architecture, and makes its considerable impression via suggestion. Previous residents include Bernie Madoff (who, if only he had been an attorney, could’ve been the de facto subject of a great Dave Frishberg tune). Madoff occupied the penthouse in the building; top floor until the downfall, as it were.
Mr. Lauer’s unit is on the sixth floor, one of 23 units across 12 stories. Like the Hamptons home, the interiors hold more than one visual surprise, accumulating nicely with a walk-through. Toning is nicely balanced, the built-in shelving is inventive, and the apartment is, generally speaking, more interesting than dazzling.
The four-and-four unit measures over 3,500 square feet. Its eighteen or so rooms include a central hall and gallery, a very large living room, a dayroom adjacent to the kitchen, a library, a staff room, and a dining room with panoramic wall covering.
Lauer’s long tenure at NBC ended late last year in the wake of multiple misconduct allegations.
