Actor and comedian Mike Myers recently sold another unit in SoHo. This time the residence in question is a penthouse unit in the Mercer Street building. The Canadian Hollywood superstar saw the apartment into the sunset after about two years on the market.
Myers picked up the property in 2007, plunking down $8 million to take possession of the just-over-4,000-square-foot residence; he listed it for the first time about two years ago, with an asking price of $17 million. The asking price had dropped to $13.95 million by the late fall of last year. The sale price could not yet be definitively established.
The SoHo building dates to 2005, and contains only nine units. The original structure was designed in the 1860’s, and faces both Mercer and Broadway. A cast-iron building, it features classical architecture. It exudes a sense of industrial purpose that was enhanced and exploited very well by the developers, giving it a gracefully understated appearance. The residential revision was completed in 2008.
As the building is 30 feet by 200, the units are exercises in linear continuation. Myers had the unit renovated after purchase, and some of the additions are striking. A floor-to-ceiling built-in bookcase with rail ladder sets off the 12’+ ceilings and open-concept loft layout nicely, giving the residence a terrific sense of proportion.
Myers’ revision extends to the unit’s exterior, giving a definite vision to the terrace with landscaping and a pergola.
Myers began his professional life in The Second City, but soon decamped to Hollywood to take scene-stealing roles in classic comedies like ‘Ghostbusters.’ He stars in the upcoming Freddie Mercury biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’
