Last summer, actress Katherine McPhee purchased a 1930’s Spanish eclectic in Studio City for a little over $2 million. In the intervening months, McPhee has had a chance to give the home a little bit of a renovation, and she’s now put the refreshed investment property up for rent at $12.5K/month.

Changes to the 3,500 square-foot residence are various and sundry. The recessed stone entry with original Gothic-arched door still injects plenty of drama into the otherwise mundane act of domestic ingress, but the Saltillo tile of the raised foyer is gone—replaced with tile that isn’t quite so evocative—and much of the raw wood has been painted; the new effect lends subtlety, foregoing overt charm. The rusticated fireplace mantel in the step-down living room is now whitewashed, which brightens that space considerably.

Many of the period light fixtures are gone as well, though, replaced with rather garish brass units, making for a somewhat contrived effort at modernization that bleaches the home’s character a little. But the soft arches, carved exposed beams, open-trussed ceilings, narrow-plank oak floors, ornamental windows, and wrought iron accents remain, keeping the original context well alive: soft, inviting, and suffused with history.

The house contains four bedrooms and four baths, with the master suite boasting an exterior balcony and raised center fireplace. The property exterior extends to include a canopy pavilion, and outdoor grill station with dining area.

McPhee’s appearances on ‘American Idol’ propelled the singer into a successful recording and performing career. She also appears on CBS’s hit series ‘Scorpion.’
