Although Mercedes stimulated plenty of industry discussion with the introduction of its 2019 G-Class at the Detroit Auto Show, many have been waiting for the new AMG G63. Considering the breadth of changes to the former, what does the immediate future hold for the latter? That wait is now over, as specific details about the 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 have been revealed.

As expected, the new AMG off-roader manages to walk the tightrope between significant update and retention of spirit as sure-footedly as the 2019 G-Class. It gets its power from a version of the S560’s 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8. This is good news for customers: the powerful setup produces 577 horsepower and 621 lb-ft of torque.

This engine power paired with a nine-speed automatic setup and 4Matic all-wheel-drive system results in a zero-to-60 mph leap of just 4.4 seconds, shedding 0.9 seconds off the old model’s time. Drivers can expect to reach a top speed of 137 mph, although speed-lovers can hit 149 mph with the addition of the Driver’s Package.

In addition to updates to the suspension and steering, the G63 benefits from the full AMG treatment with a rounded grille, side-exit exhaust, and a tougher front bumper. The interior’s mix of leather, metal, and carbon fiber, in addition to two 12.3-inch displays and a number of trim options, is the expected champagne-in-the-outback creature comfort treatment.

Mercedes-Benz has yet to reveal pricing information, but customers can get a closer look at the new G63 next month at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.
