Westside Estate Agency co-founder and CEO Kurt Rappaport quietly parted with his contemporary estate in Malibu this winter; the buyer of the $120 million property is reportedly Daryl Katz, the Canadian billionaire whose business interests include ownership of the Edmonton Oilers.

The estate—designed by Scott Mitchell—is a unique trophy property with a strikingly cohesive vision. The house and grounds use a blend of concrete and worn timber to achieve a look that is at one and the same time-weathered coastal and urban, suggesting both the individual history of Malibu and its more general context, the City of Industry next door.

The interiors of the home employ concrete, raw timber and plank walls, plank floors and ceilings, and plain steel-framed windows. The living room is a marvelous expression of transparency, with a wall of windows on one side, and a retractable glass wall opening toward the water on the other.

The influence of modern design is substantial, although the sense of optimism is a little guarded, suggesting a more contemporary sensibility. Landscape is an essential part of the home’s interior living style, extending perception of interior space into the outside world. Mitchell’s studio designed the landscaping, too, incorporating a series of concrete dividers that aggregate to form an installation, continually reinforcing the balance between the engineered and the wild.

The six acres of land include gardens, lawns, and a very long pool between house and ocean that stretches to 168 feet.
