Apple‘s highly anticipated HomePod is now available to preorder for $349.
The smart speaker enters the market with popular competitors already present…namely, Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Home series. The device is more expensive than the Alexa or the basic Home unit, with only Google’s Home Max priced higher. Even though Apple’s new product is more expensive than the fundamental offerings of its competitors, the tech giant’s creation has a few tricks up its sleeve, and packs in a whole lot of appeal in a small package.
Users will enjoy premium sound production thanks to a seven-tweeter setup paired with a high-excursion woofer. The HomePod also boasts a six-microphone array for recognizing user feedback and commands from all directions.
Although the smart speaker does boast a number of similar features as its competitors, what sets the device apart is its integration of Siri, and the fact that Apple engaged in some serious audio engineering in developing the device. Most notably, the HomePod can automatically measure the acoustics of its space, in order to adjust playback for perfect sound performance. Nifty, and original.
In addition to playing music from an iTunes library or Apple music, Siri can complete a number of tasks like scheduling a calendar event or checking the weather. Users can also pair two HomePods together for a stereo effect, in addition to connecting with HomeKit-compatible devices like a smart thermostat.
Apple is accepting preorders now; the HomePod will hit stores February 9.
