Morgan Motor Company’s EV3 is all kinds of things to all kinds of people. A car from the front end, a motorcycle from behind, and both all-electric and intoxicatingly evocative of the classic British roadsters produced before internal combustion became unfashionable, the car attempts to reconcile a dizzying array of automotive contradictions in a single vehicle. In the end, though, it’s just uber-cool, a vehicle for introspective poets and the self-conscious, speedsters and the eco-conscious.

And, it’ll be on roads soon. Morgan introduced the EV3 to the world—and the world to the EV3—back in 2015 as a concept, and rolled out a prototype in Geneva last year. The company has brought Frazer-Nash Energy Systems onboard to provide power for the vehicle: a 46.5 horsepower motor with a 21 kWh LI battery-pack behind it. The EV3 has a range of 120 miles before a charge is necessary; that’s a 20% decrease over estimates made by the company a year ago, but still very considerable, and more than enough to make a daily commute or weekend afternoon jaunt worry-free. The car’s carbon-fiber components keep weight to under 1,000 pounds, allowing the car a quick EV-style launch of 7 seconds to 60 MPH.

Combining a bit of Morgan Motor Company’s history—the three-wheeler is not a new concept for British automakers—with a zero-emissions vehicle, and tossing in the aero-influenced aesthetics of the 1930’s, the EV3 is the most daring design in Morgan’s current lineup, prefiguring the automaker’s transition to EV options for all its models.

Production begins next year. Pricing for the EV3 begins at around $40K.
