For regular production wagons, heart of gold and speedy-as-all-get-out subcategories, the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo is an awful lot of family car. And an awful lot of name, too.

The power for this Panamera variant is provided by a 4L bi-turbo V8, an electric motor, and a 14.1 kWh lithium-ion battery. And—as if there was any doubt—it has the soul of a Porsche, with 680 HP producing 626 pound-feet of torque. The E-Hybrid Sport Turismo can hit 60 in 3.2 seconds, and this particular family car has a top speed of 192 MPH.

Porsche is offering the only regular production high-end hybrid-drivetrain sport wagon on the market in the U.S., so the decision to bring the car across the pond to the land of crossover fever was a considered one. And, the car should appeal to connoisseurs, as its graceful, sloping, shooting brake roofline manages to reconcile the station wagon and cosmetic appeal.

The E-Hybrid Sport Turismo emphasizes the ‘sport’ very intently, with adaptive aerodynamics as a standard feature, including that active roof spoiler so prominent at the tail end of the car, which adjusts to three different preset positions in order to juggle stability concerns and fuel economy.

The car does a fairly good job of juggling fuel economy and sport-driving generally, and the E-Hybrid Sport Turismo can travel 30 miles at up to 86 MPH on electric power alone, enough for many workaday weekdays. But, when weekends call, it’s one of the fastest Panamera models currently on offer.

Pricing for the 2018 Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo begins at $189K.
