Lexus presented a pair of additions to its crossover lineup at the L.A. Auto Show this week. The new models fill out the RX lineup to four variants. The RX series is the best-selling crossover model tier in the current Lexus catalog, fitting in that ‘sweet spot’ that’s above entry-level but not a fully tricked out, ‘old-fashioned’ SUV, and demand for a larger version of the RX has been high.
Enter the RX 350L, and RX 450hL hybrid models. Both variations seat 7, with an additional 4.3 inches of length accommodating the extra seat. The rear of the new RX models is a little more abrupt, for headroom considerations for that third row of seats. Cargo space is a little less extravagant than the standard RX and RX hybrid models. But, climate control extends to all three rows, a basic creature comfort for this level of crossover, and captain’s chairs are available as an option on the 350L.
The spindle grille of the models is the gaping and dramatic statement that graces more recent Lexi, a massive void that threatens to swallow up the competition. The nose is also quite blunt, giving the whole car a muscular stance that effectively bridges SUV powerhouse build and automobile fluidity. And that’s the name of the game right now.
The 350L gets the same 3.5L V6 as the standard RX; the 450hL receives a pair of electric motors, for a horsepower total of 308, about 20 HP more than the 350L. Both models will be available next month, starting at around $50K.
