Bentley Will Make Just 19 Mulsanne Grand Convertibles

If you’ve been waiting breathlessly for word on the Bentley Mulsanne convertible, you may rest easy: the model variation, which had been introduced to much fanfare as a concept in 2014, will be soon available for sale as a special-order model.

This is good news for prospective buyers who fell in love three years ago, but were discouraged by the company’s uncertain position on seeing the car into production. But, interested buyers will have to be both lucky and decisive once orders begin, as the Grand Convertible will only be available in a very limited run, and only available by invitation.

For those who wish to enter into that august group of owners, the process of construction promises to be an incredibly satisfying customization experience. Bentley’s customization division, Mulliner, will work with clients as they build their dream Bentley ragtop, with trim, materials, colors and, one would expect, custom inlays among the possible individual choices available.

Bentley hasn’t revealed any numbers as of yet, but the Grand Convertible will probably be outfitted with the same 530 HP, 6.75L V8 engine; launch time could very well be a whisker slower than the standard Mulsanne, due to the possibility of weight added because of the structural demands of the convertible design, but that’s surmise at this point.

Most interesting is the walnut tonneau that hides the cloth when the Grand Convertible is in drop-top mode; it’s the largest piece of wood ever used in a Bentley, and the design is intended to evoke classic powerboats made by English companies like Riva.

Only 19 examples of the Grand Convertible will be built.
