Peter Lassally—affectionately known the ‘Host Whisperer’ to those in the television business—recently listed his Frank Gehry-designed home in Malibu. Lassally is asking $7.25 million for the home on El Matador Beach, which dates to the early 1980’s, spans three floors, and measures 2,766 square feet.
A quick look at the home’s exterior suggests a fairly conventional contemporary design that doesn’t seek to overshadow the beauty of its location, but there’s a little of the Gehry ebullience in how the home’s interiors open to their landscape. The architecture reflects the place, then, with exposed raw wood beams, tile floors, and an open concept living area punctuated by simple support posts. So, despite the industrial influence that marks the exterior, the interior is in fact earthy and unpretentious, with a terrific sense of proportion, and a firm idea of its identity.
As expected, there’s a great deal of glass, but not so much that the home ceases to define a boundary between inside and outside. The master suite is a good example of how nicely it all works, managing to suggest the best of Malibu cottage life while keeping the composition free of ornamental distraction.
Lots of deck space, too, as expected. The property isn’t large, but the lot is just isolated enough: the home is situated at the end of a private road.
In his childhood, Lassally brushed elbows with Anne Frank and survived Theresienstadt. He produced ‘The Tonight Show,’ ‘Late Night with David Letterman,’ and ‘The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,’ among others, and was widely known as a sensitive counselor to fledgling hosts. He retired in 2015.
