If the deal closes, Keith Urban’s gift to spouse Nicole Kidman should carry him at least to Valentine’s Day. The country-pop crossover artist is reportedly considering dropping a stout $39 million on this mansion in Manhattan for Ms. Kidman, a something-more-than-functional pied-a-terre for the actress as she pursues a new phase of her career: Broadway. And, television. But mainly Broadway. And, it does come with a celebrity provenance closely associated with raw creativity, and showmanship: Marc Chagall is listed as a previous owner, as is Michael Jackson.
The townhome is located on the Upper East Side, and dates to the turn of the last century. It’s a Beaux-Arts design, and features a characteristically grandiose façade: ornate but not overblown, and so extremely confident, and knockout beautiful. A little on the baroque side, sure, but much more interesting than a soberly neoclassical façade, any day. After all, would you rather read Johnson’s ‘Rasselas’ or Balzac’s ‘Lost Illusions’ a second time?
In any case. The home measures nearly 13,000 square feet across a whopping six floors of living space; it’s 25 feet wide, and 100 feet deep. It was originally commissioned by a prominent corporate attorney of the era. It is situated in an idyllic corner of Manhattan, just around the corner from Central Park and the Whitney.
A few of the home’s details, and a little layout info: a grand foyer in the Beaux-Arts tradition, common spaces on the first two floors, and a suite and six bedrooms above. The basement contains a staff room, gym, and media room. Interestingly, the sixth floor of the townhome is discreetly recessed. A rooftop deck crowns the living spaces.
Urban and Kidman married in 2006. They have two daughters.
